Funeral services for Marlin Eugene Hinde, Jr., were held on Saturday, August 21, at 11 a.m. at the Haxtun United Methodist Church. Marlin died on August 15, 2010, at the age of 62. He was born in Sterling on November 20, 1947, the first of four children born to Marlin Edwin Hinde and Katherine May (Harding) Hinde.

Marlin attended school in North Highlands, California, where he graduated from North Highlands High School and immediately joined the United States Army. He served in the Infantry and spent three tours fighting in the Vietnam War before going to Korea where he served as a Motor Transport Operator before returning stateside. He served a total of 12 years in the Army, earning three Good Conduct medals, a National Defense Service Medal, a Global Expeditionary Medal, three Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medals, the Vietnam Gallantry Cross and the Vietnam Service Medal. Marlin also earned a Combat Infantry Badge and an Expert Rifle Marksmanship Badge.

Marlin had five children, Eric, Arisa, Mary, Sharon, and Marlin, III. He enjoyed making people smile with his poetry, which he wrote often, and doting on his grandchildren, who he loved spending time with. He never left a conversation without showing off their pictures and boasting about the funny things they did. He received comfort and encouragement by memorizing Scripture.

Marlin’s hobbies included shooting pool, shooting guns and watching the History Channel. He had a generous heart and often gave to those less fortunate. Marlin had a deep love for his family. He spoke highly of his mother and cared for her needs the best way he knew how. Survivors include his mother, Katherine Hinde, sister Sharon Woodside, brother Robert Hinde, five children and eight grandchildren.

He will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him.
