Rick, I stumbled onto your site looking for pictures of LZ Fuller/ Dong
Ha Mountain, & found the story written by Chuck Truitt. I thought I'd
send these pics to show what LZ Fuller/Dong Ha Mountain looked like in
Sept of 2006. Myself & Raymond Shaw went back there, I should say
Ray & our guide Mr. Duy from Dong Ha did, I dropped out about 2/3 way
there while Ray, Mr Duy & another guide continued on. We were to make
the hump to LZ Russell (about 5 miles west from LZ Fuller) the next day
& I definitely didn't want to miss getting up to Russell because of
being wore out from going to fuller, good excuse anyway, HA HA HA
Let me give a little info about myself & the others.
I'm Ken Heins President of the LZ Russell Association see
lzrussell.org I was with Hotel 3/12 on LZ Russell from Nov. 68 until
Sept. 21, 69 when Russell was abandoned & we moved Hotel Btry to LZ
Fuller. & in a week or so after that I rotated back to the states. Randy
& Ray were with a grunt unit supporting LZ Russell, & Mike Gilbert is a
Friend who's Marine Son was KIA in Iraq last OCT., Mr. Duy is the LZ
Russell Associations main Guide in I Corp.
*Fast forward to April 12th, 2005 @ approximately 1400 hrs Viet Nam
time (0200 CDT) 3 Marines and 3 Vietnamese Guides occupied LZ Russell.
LZ Russell was again occupied on Sept 21st, of 2006 By Randy Epperson,
Mike Gilbert, Ray Shaw, & Ken Heins **and 4 Vietnamese Guides **for a
memorial for the Marines who lost there lives **37 years ago** on LZ
Russell when while being dismantled the hill blew up prematurely & for
another Marine who was there on Sept. 21st, 69 & lost his battle with
the demons of LZ Russell in Dec of 2005.
Thank You
