"Pete Runnels - Roughing It- October, 1966
This picture
(click to enlarge) was taken in Khe Sanh, Vietnam in Oct
1966. Marine in the elephant grass on the left who is down in the hole on the comm gear is Thomas (Tom) Dague. Marine named
Nicky Cook is standing at back of jeep. I am on the right in pic.
This picture is also posted at the Vietnam Memorial at NSA.
We were the first Intercept unit in Khe Sanh. Oh by the way, we built that Hut
from the ground up with things we gathered in the surrounding area. We were
really roughing it! No mail for 28 days and the only other Marines we could talk
to were on the Rock Pile. The Rock Pile would relay our messages to Dong Ha for
us. We never knew how things were until the sky cleared one day and Gen Green
flew up in his Helicopter and took us out of there. Khe Sanh was the first and
only place I've seen where the clouds formed at ground level. This little Detachment
of ours ID'd many of the units coming from the North to the South. Did they take
us serious? I don't know. But I think they could have done more to prevent 1968.
Just my opinion!!!!
